Background

 

Kava kava (Piper methysticum) is a tropical shrub that is native to the Western Pacific Islands. It is traditionally used as a medicinal herb to help alleviate conditions such as rheumatism, asthma, fungal infections, leprosy, urinary infections, headaches, and insomnia.

The active ingredients in the kava kava plant are called kavalactones, which are found in its roots. Research has shown that the therapeutic effects of kavalactones are anxiolytic (eases anxiety), sedative, anticonvulsant, anti-spasmodic, numbing, and antipruritic (relieves itching).

 

General use

Kava kava is generally prescribed to treat a wide range of ailments including:

 

  • Neuralgia (nerve pain) from damage, degeneration, and post-surgical symptoms
  • Anxiety and panic attacks
  • Insomnia, for getting to sleep and staying asleep
  • Infections in the genito-urinary system
  • Stress and stress-related symptoms such as insomnia and IBS
  • Muscle tightness, injuries, and misalignments
  • Menstrual and other cramps
  • Burns, pain from injury, bites, stings, rashes, and the like (topical solution)

Safety Information

Kava kava capsules are best not taken with high alcohol consumption, if you are pregnant, if you are taking pharmaceutical prescriptions or over-the-counter medications (such as NSAIDs), or if you have liver disease.
