Kava kava (Piper methysticum) is a tropical shrub that is native to the Western Pacific Islands. It is traditionally used as a medicinal herb to help alleviate conditions such as rheumatism, asthma, fungal infections, leprosy, urinary infections, headaches, and insomnia.
The active ingredients in the kava kava plant are called kavalactones, which are found in its roots. Research has shown that the therapeutic effects of kavalactones are anxiolytic (eases anxiety), sedative, anticonvulsant, anti-spasmodic, numbing, and antipruritic (relieves itching).
